Tillandsias grow differently than most other house plants, so they can be confusing to the beginner. They are really very hardy, and require much less attention than other house plants.

Tillandsia is a genus of around 650 species of evergreen, perennial flowering plants in the family Bromeliaceae, native to the forests, mountains and deserts of northern Mexico and south-eastern United States, Mesoamerica and the Caribbean to mid Argentina.

Their leaves, more or less silvery in color, are covered with specialized cells (trichomes) capable of rapidly absorbing water that gathers on them.

Air plant varieties range in size from two inches to seven feet. The varieties that are frequently found in stores are typically two to five inches in size. There are varieties that bloom flowers but this usually signals that the plant is near the end of its life cycle.

Tillandsias make excellent houseplants because they are easy to care for. They need to be kept somewhere with good light, but not direct sunlight.

The elephant ear plant (Colocasia) provides a bold tropical effect in nearly any landscape setting. In fact, these plants are commonly grown for their large, tropical-looking foliage, which is reminiscent of elephant ears.

Elephant ear plants can be used as background plants, ground covers, or edging, especially around ponds, along walkways, or patio enclosures.

Colocasia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to southeastern Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Some species are widely cultivated and naturalized in other tropical and subtropical regions.

The names elephant-ear and cocoyam are also used for some other large-leaved genera in the Araceae, notably Xanthosoma and Caladium.

The elephant’s-ear plant gets its name from the leaves, which are shaped like a large ear or shield.

They are herbaceous perennial plants with a large corm on or just below the ground surface. The leaves are large to very large, 20–150 cm (7.9–59.1 in) long, with a sagittate shape.

Most varieties fall within the 3′ to 5′ tall range.

Ivy can make a wonderful, bright light houseplant. It can grow long and lush and bring a bit of the outdoors inside. Growing ivy indoors is easy as long as you know what makes an ivy plant happy.

This evergreen plant climbs up the side of trees and buildings, adding color wherever it goes.

Hedera, commonly called ivy (plural ivies), is a genus of 12–15 species of evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plants in the family Araliaceae, native to western, central and southern Europe, Macaronesia, northwestern Africa and across central-southern Asia east to Japan and Taiwan.

It will take around 3 months for the Ivy to become established on your fence, once that has happened the growth rate will significantly increase. You can expect your ivy to grow up to 9 feet annually and the leaves to grow up to 3 feet, so your fence will be covered quicker than you realise.

It is a green climbing plant that is often found on the sides of trees, houses and fences, and is commonly used as a decoration in gardens and on the sides of houses and fences.

Boston ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata) are popular houseplants and proper Boston fern care is essential to keeping this plant healthy.

This evergreen plant can reach as high as 40–90 centimetres (16–35 in), and in extreme cases up to 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in). It is also known as the Boston swordfern, wild Boston fern, Boston Blue Bell Fern, tuber ladder fern, or fishbone fern.

Frosty ferns are very misunderstood plants, both in name and care requirements. They frequently pop up in stores and nurseries around the holidays (probably due to their wintery name) but many buyers see them fail and die soon after they come home.

When growing frosty fern plants is that they need at least 70 percent humidity. This is much higher than the average home.

The “secret” to successfully growing frosty fern is to treat it like the tropical rainforest plant it is.

Frosty fern is actually more of a moss than a fern, and is commonly also referred to as spike moss or clubmoss. Its scaled leaves resemble conifer leaves. It can grow 4 to 12 inches in height. Its active growing season is mid to late summer, with the correct environment it actively grows year round.

In a commercial greenhouse environment, frosty fern is easy and inexpensive to propagate and grow. Temperatures are reduced to below 65 degrees to encourage the plant’s new growth tips to turn white.

It needs moist, well-drained soil, deep shade, temperatures between 68 to 84 degrees, and 77 to 88 percent humidity (please, no misting!).
